Anthems of Dialogue

BETA Quartet was endorsed to premiere three (3) new commissioning works for the 2024-2025 Anthems of Dialogue initiative.

After putting a lot of thought into how we wanted to approach this opportunity we are thrilled to announce that AoD features works by narrative-driven composer, pedagogue, and flutist Erin Spencer, DownBeat® Magazine Award Winner and saxophonist Caroline Davis, and Latin GRAMMY® Winning contemporary classical composer and flutist, José Valentino.

Each new work powerfully explores how music can bridge community gaps and drive societal progress by addressing urgent contemporary themes. These works will be performed in Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and West Virginia.

| anti-oppressive | absolute zero | revoluliberation | by Caroline Davis confronts the urgency of dismantling systems of control, like that of mass incarceration, emphasizing the critical role of communication in the fight for justice.

Borrowed Earth by Erin Spencer reflects on the impact of our actions on future generations and our responsibility as caretakers of the planet. The title of the piece draws from the phrase: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."

Power Surge by José Valentino captures the unpredictability of our current global turmoil, blending cultural influences and transforming music into a vehicle for reflection and meaningful change.
